Over the past few years I have experienced extended traveling, lost 30 lbs, gotten a handle on some pretty serious insomnia and steadily reduced the amount of work related stress I experience. As I look back, what has been invaluable to me is reducing unnecessary complexity, and applying concepts of minimalism to my life.
In the spirit of minimalism I will briefly present some key concepts that helped me to improve and elaborate in further posts.
I replaced complex workout parameters with simple workouts emphasizing essential movements and achieved greater results in less time.
I stopped worrying so much about complex diet prescriptions and focused on eating only certain foods when I am hungry. This lead to improved body composition.
I started owning less and was therefore able to work less for a period of time, travel more and realize employment options that are less stressful and more attuned to my beliefs.
The concept of needing less is incredibly powerful and effective at creating freedom and health in life. At some point, I decided that having high car payments, new clothes, cable TV, and other trivial possessions were neither worth the stress they create nor the experiences that they deny. Beyond material possessions, I also found that letting go of some misguided, yet highly defended notions of health and fitness equally as liberating.
What are you willing to let go to create freedom in your life?
