There’s no denying that most people aren’t very optimistic with the direction the world is headed. Turn on the news or read any social media and you’ll see scenes of violence, dissent, and graphics of debt and economic decline.
While some believe there may be a total collapse in our near future reminiscent of any popular, post-apocalyptic movie, this extreme view is probably unlikely…I hope. Nonetheless, humoring that fatalistic bunch, things may get increasingly difficult. However, even if things don’t turn out to be as bad as some predict, wouldn’t you want to want to know you have the capacity to exist exceptionally well in any situation?
In pondering what may occur if things don’t turn around and why, I realized that what we used to consider as luxuries, we know consider necessities. And what used to be the most adaptive and intelligent species, seems to have devolved to a group of entitled beings dependent on an exceedingly stressed social net. If the net collapses will you fall? So I ask you all, how capable are you? In other words, how dependent are you on the ‘luxuries’ of today’s society? And how well could you get by if they all went away?
Below are 8 methods to help you exist exceptionally well in a sh%tty world:
1. Become as healthy as possible so that you do not require regular medical treatment:
Aside from a bad infection that may have claimed my arm and maybe my life (would have been a good fight), without IV antibiotics, I have required no medical assistance in almost four years since adopting eating habits that are nearly devoid of any processed foods, grains, and pasteurized dairy. Nutrition should be preventative medicine. Despite what you may feel is best to eat, we all agree that eating ‘junk’ or fast food is not the path to health. Health care is a huge issue today, therefore, it’s in all of our best interest to reduce our dependence on it.
2. Increase your physical strength:
Being stronger means more capacity for what life throws at you and also more options for work opportunities, self maintenance of your home, transportation, like walking or riding a bike rather than relying on a car or public transportation, and free entertainment, like hiking or other outdoor activities.
Frequent lay-offs are a reality today requiring many to search for employment in other fields. With a strong and fit body you won’t limit yourself to searching for sedentary jobs only. Not only that, but by having a large physical capacity you will be able to save money by walking or riding your bike
rather than driving.
3. Reduce your dependency on the market:
Learn to get by with less and realize having a more expensive car or home is not necessary for happiness. Spend less by exercising methods one and two above. Owning less stuff can reduce your stress and gives you the freedom to work less and choose a job that may not pay as much, but you’ll enjoy more.
4. Develop and learn natural or primitive skills such as wild foraging, gardening and hunting:
There are a number of resources out there to acquire these skills from great teachers. There is no better feeling than saving a great deal of money by eating food you obtained yourself. Not to mention wild foods make practice one far more possible.
5. Avoid most news:
Don’t stress yourself out worrying about what may happen. Most news is speculative and designed to capture your attention and consume your time. You don’t have to sell your TV or computer, but learn to disconnect from time to time. Stressing over issues in the world you cannot control can certainly drain your energy needlessly; energy you could spend doing method four.
6. Become part of a group or network that shares a positive message and contributes to the community:
Volunteering and becoming a positive and contributing member of society will help you achieve a sense of control and help improve rather than run from a struggling society.
7. Get into nature at least once a week:
Hike, camp, sail, and get lost (figuratively). Whatever you can do and for as often as you can, get into the woods or the ocean. Perspective is too easily lost when the reminders of society are all around us. The mountains, lakes and oceans were here before any social unrest, and will be here long after. Connect to the timelessness and simplicity nature provides. Mark’s Daily Apple, a blog we follow regularly, says it well in this post.
8. Engage in philosophical thought:
People think far too often about politics, gossip and current events. Learning to ponder and discover different outlooks on life can help someone gain a greater perspective on the important things in life. Getting lost in the noise of social media, reality television and doomsday news broadcasts is a tiring and addictive practice. Reading the work of many philosophers will add depth to your thoughts and realize there are a number of ways to achieve a meaningful existence.
Despite your belief of what the future holds for us all, realize that you can control your own actions and increase your freedom from the economy driven, and media speculated, impending doom. Think clearly and deeply, build your capacity skill and community, and reconnect to nature. Follow these practices to empower your existence independent of any societal regression.
What actions have you taken or plan to take to live exceptionally well in a not so exceptional world?
