It is easy to forget that you are an animal, at the cusp of and refined over millions of years of evolution. It’s amazing really. The same genes, brains and muscles that allowed humans to thrive under harsh conditions all over the world, well before the comforts of modern life are still alive in you today. Our ancestors were artists, problem solvers, and physical “machines.” Our modern lifestyles present many problems that lend to us forgetting and losing faith in our truly remarkable natural abilities.
It is important to remember that no matter where you stand right now with ill health, uncertainty or other unfortunate circumstances, you have, genetically coded within you, the ability to physically and mentally do some amazing things. You have the ability to overcome and thrive. Just take a look at human history.
Rather than looking at any “deficits” you may have and thinking in terms of how you can gradually progress to something “better,” look at how you can help your body and mind remember its natural state and basic needs as an animal.
- Moving intensely at times and moving heavy things will help your body remember that it is strong.
- Moving for longer periods of time at a slower rate will help your body remember that it is capable of traversing great distances.
- Eating whole, real food similar to those that our ancestors ate will help your body remember its lean, healthy state.
- Removing from your life causes of chronic stress and getting more sleep will help your body remember its ability to heal.
These practices serve as signals that can provide your body with cues to reprogram your genes. In following them you can still access the highly evolved animal within you: if you remember its needs. Wherever you are at in life, whatever you may be struggling with, have faith that if you honor your primal needs, you can use the strengths of your primitive past to thrive in the present.
